Window Hardware
When you buy a new window it will come equipped with some hardware, usually the basic things for opening and closing the sash and latches. Here is a closer look to the window hardware.

Window cranks
Casement and awning windows utilize cranks for opening and closing (the older types of windows are using push-bar operators). Cranks are offered by some manufacturers in nonmetallic finishes, and some new types have fold-down handles that are relatively inconspicuous.

Window latches and locks
in order to hold your window totaly closed you use latches. On tall or wide hinged windows it's recommended to ues two latches. On double hung windows, use sash locks in order to pull together the upper and lower sash. You can improve security by using sash locks. On sliders you should use locks that the operable sashes won't be able to be jimmied open.

Window hinges
The best casement and awning hinges pivot allowing arm space between the sash and the window frame in order to make the washing of the exterior glass an easy job. the European hardware cen even turn casement window into a hopper window. The hardware locks in several places are tightly around the frame, and that's why the windows have very low air infiltration. But in contrast to the American casement windows, the European-style window mechanism swings.

Window counterbalances
Use the sash to balance on the sides of double-hung windows by mechanisms such as torsion screws.

Sliding window mechanisms
At most of the aluminum and vinyl windows, the sashes are so lightweight so they can slide in the sill tracks. On the other hand if you use large door height sashes, you must support them by using heavy duty rollers on the door height sashes bottom edges.
